Giving Voice to Values

Digital Program

Giving Voice to Values (GVV) is an innovative approach to values-driven leadership development in business education and the workplace. Rather than a focus on ethical analysis, the Giving Voice to Values (GVV) curriculum focuses on ethical implementation and asks the questions: “What if I were going to act on my values? What would I say and do? How could I be most effective?"

Recognize, clarify, speak and act on your values in your working life.

  • Raise ethical issues in an effective manner.
  • Learn what to do and say in order to be heard.
  • Steer your organization in a new direction better aligned with your values.

Program Format

Giving Voice to Values is conducted entirely online over the course of 5 weeks. There are five modules, called Field Manuals, featuring these topics:

  • Values in Context
  • Values Conflicts
  • Speaking Up
  • Acting on Values
  • Listening for Values

Each field manual contains principle/theory/practice content, videos, quizzes, polls and debate topics/situations for which you are asked to contribute. You'll also have the opportunity to read comments from other members in your cohort and vote for your favorites. You earn badges and points by completing each field manual and receiving votes on your comments. This engaging and social approach is to encourage interaction with your fellow participants and make the experience fun - meaning that you're more likely to remember what you've learned.

For the course to be completely successful, participants should maintain respectful communication with fellow participants and comply with all applicable rules, instructions, requirements and terms of service.

Program Overview

Align your individual sense of purpose with that of your organization.

  • Assess and utilize your individual strengths.
  • Construct and practice responses to the most frequent rationalizations for not acting on one’s values.
  • Focus on positive examples of people finding ways to voice, and thereby implement, their values in the workplace
Mary Gentile’s Giving Voice to Values is a clarion call to the new generation of leaders to put their values in practice in the workplace. Its timely and thoughtful message is precisely what the corporate world needs now. Bill George, Professor of Management Practice, Harvard Business School and former CEO, Medtronic

Outcomes & Impact

  • Identify what has enabled or disabled you from voicing your values.
  • Cultivate environments where value conflicts are brought forth and discussed, rather than repressed.
  • Plan concrete actions to address issues of values.

Certificate

Completing Giving Voice to Values counts as one-quarter of a credit towards your Certificate in Management. Complete any combination of online courses (each count as 1/4 credit) and face-to-face programs (most count as 1 credit) to earn a total of four credits in a four-year period to earn your certificate.

Giving Voice to Values heralds a revolution in ethics education. Gentile isn't interested in abstract (and often fruitless) debates about ethical principles — rather, she wants to help you practice what to do when you know something is unethical. It’s like a self-defense class for your soul. Dan and Chip Heath, authors of Switch and Made to Stick

Participants

This program is designed for leaders seeking to develop a culture of integrity and moral competence, and individuals who want to defend their values with confidence.
